Are all food cans, including organic, lined with a cancer-causing plastic? Read the customer question below and the answer that follows.

I would like to know if all cans, even the organic food cans, are lined with a cancer-causing plastic, as per Bill Moyers 5/30/08 (I believe).

Answer:
As far as we can tell, the only canned products that are NOT packaged in plastic-lined cans are Eden Organic beans or bean combinations.

Food cans are lined with plastic to keep the metals from migrating into the food, especially acidic foods like canned tomatoes. That plastic contains Bisphenol-A (BPA), a chemical that has been identified as a possible carcinogen. BPA has been in the news because it is in #7 plastics, the hard polycarbonate plastic used in baby bottles and sports water bottles.

Except for Eden Organic beans and bean combinations, all conventional and organic products are in BPA-lined cans. This includes other Eden products, such as tomatoes.

To avoid this chemical, shoppers should choose products packaged in glass, aseptic containers, or soft packs; buy frozen foods; or purchase foods fresh or dried and cook them from scratch.
