The Co-op Food Stores

If you have been following Co-op News reports by General Manager Terry Appleby, you know that the Co-op is replacing our current convenience store on Lyme Road in Hanover with a new building. UK Architects of Hanover have worked with the Co-op to design a new Community Market that is environmentally friendly and features a much broader product line. Plans call for a real produce section, a deli, and expanded frozen food, meat, and prepared foods sections. There will be seating for patrons, as well.

But what about over the next six months, while the building is closed and the new site is being developed?

Here is what we know:

• The old store has officially been shut down and construction crews have built a fence around the property.

• The removal of the gas tanks, pumps, piping, and canopy began in early May. Some environmental remediation of the site will occur at that time as well. The most anticipated event will be the day the old store is torn down.

• Once construction starts in earnest, it will take approximately five months to complete the job.  

• Because the site is in a prominent spot near the roundabout, there will be plenty to see as the building goes up, so drivers should be aware that some “rubber necking” will be going on. Be careful! Construction vehicles will be pulling in and out of the area, so stay alert.

• While the store is being constructed, Community Market staff will be working at other Co-op locations to assist during the busy summer months. As time draws close for the opening of the new store, staff will begin training for work in their new areas. 

• A week or two before the actual opening, after we’ve received the certificate of occupancy, we’ll begin to receive products and set the shelves. We will also test all the mechanical systems, especially refrigeration. Shortly before opening we will receive perishable food. 

Finally, we will plan tours for neighborhood members shortly before the store opens officially. Then one beautiful, sunny day we will have our grand opening!
