Check out three great workshops, beginning Saturday, April 26!
Starting April 26, and continuing through May 17, three workshops focused on growing local food will be held at the Rice’s Mills Community Center located on Rt. 132 in Thetford Center, Vermont, 100 yards toward S. Strafford from the intersection with Tucker Hill Rd.
The workshops are organized by the Thetford Energy Committee and Rice’s Mills Community Association and are generously sponsored by Thetford growers and producers, Cedar Circle Farm and Crossroad Farm. The workshops are free, but donations to support ongoing RMCA and TEC activities and schoolhouse upkeep are appreciated.
Elmer Brown will talk about grafting and budding of fruit trees. Elmer is the founder and owner of E. C. Browns’ Nursery was the propagating foreman for the Henry Field Seed Nursery Company in Shenandoah, Iowa from 1952-1956. Chris Wilson, who has been in the nursery business since 1980 working at the E. C. Browns’ Nursery for the past 20 years, will discuss unusual fruit to grow in the Upper Valley.
Scott Stokoe, manager of the Dartmouth Organic Farm will discuss the basics of soil management strategies for the home garden, using organic soil matter, amendments and strategies for maintaining and improving soil fertility. Scott will briefly explore potting soils and soil block technology.
Scot Zens and Niko Horster, Thetford residents experienced in raising farm animals, will discuss many issues related to raising chickens, including breeds, feed, housing, pasturing, fencing, equipment, building a “chicken tractor” (portable coop & cage) and slaughter. This will be a very full 2-hours, so come prepared.

SERG promotes energy conservation, efficiency and renewables through the formation of town energy committees to help residents, businesses and the municipalities reduce energy consumption, save money, increase the sustainable use of renewables, strengthen the local economy and improve the environment.
