From her home in north central New Hampshire, Andra House celebrates her Latvian heritage through the breads she bakes. “I learned to bake from my grandmothers, who were both Latvian,” says Andra. “Feeding people is how we show that we care.” She furthered her skills working in a Connecticut-based Latvian bakery before settling in northern New Hampshire.
Andra bakes five types of bread: Latvian Sourdough Rye, Sourdough White, Challah, Sweet Bread with Cinnamon, and Sweet Bread with Almond. The recipes are traditional. Her personal touch is the braided tops, a loving gesture that grew from braiding her daughter’s hair. Andra is a tradition at the Co-op in her own right: she’s one of our original local bakers. From her first delivery of 30 loaves in 1989, Andra’s business has expanded to approximately 200 loaves per week delivered fresh to the Co-op on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays.
